I work at a pizzeria, and we’re always experimenting with topping combinations and how to make a normally savory dish like pizza, sweet. This week we hit the jack pot. We made a dessert pie that remarkable tastes just like apple pie, get it “Apple Pie” I thought it was kind of cute. Anyway, I’ll break it down so you can make it at home. The following proportions are for 8oz pizza dough stretched to approximately 8in in diameter.
What you’ll need:
2 granny smith apples pealed and sliced
½ a cup of Cinnamon Sugar
¼ a cup of amaretto liquor
8oz pizza dough
A pinch of Flour
A pinch of Sugar
Vanilla ice cream
Caramel sauce
Powdered sugar
Directions:
After you peeled and sliced your apples you are going to make your marinate. Take the ½ of cinnamon sugar and ¼ of a cup of amaretto liquor and mix it together with the apple slices. After the apples are coated with the mixture cover the bowl tightly with saran wrap or put them in an air tight container. Put the apple mixture in the refrigerator for at least an hour so the amaretto/cinnamon sugar mix can be absorbed by the apples.
While the apples are doing their thing in the refrigerator, let’s get started on the pizza dough.
Depending on what type of dough you bought, either the Pillsbury pizza dough or you made it yourself, for this you need 8oz, so a kitchen scale is recommended for accurate proportions. Coat the dough ball in flour and stretch it into a circle. If you have a pizza stone or you are using a baking sheet, flour the bottom of the sheet slightly so the pizza won’t stick. Once your dough is stretched out and on your backing sheet you can start building your “Apple Pie”.
First you take a pinch of granulated sugar and put it down evenly on the dough, this helps the apples to stick to the dough. Take your apples and place them evenly on the dough. Before putting the pizza in the oven sprinkle another pinch or two of sugar over the top of the apples to create a nice caramelization. Follow the pre heat and cook time of the dough you chose to use, normally around 425 degrees for about 15 minutes.
Once your “Apple Pie” is done, top it with Vanilla ice cream and drizzle caramel sauce over the whole thing. A dusting of powdered sugar finishes the pie now cut and enjoy your “Apple Pie”.
